NWMGA 4 Ball Trophy - Sunday 3rd August at Bury Golf Club

Congratulations go to Dave Jolley and Andy Hirst, who were crowned the NWMGA 4 Ball Trophy Champions yesterday with a fantastic 48 Points.

Nwmga 4 Ball Trophywinners

from L-R, Mr. President, Andy Hirst, NWMGA President, Dave Jolley, and Mr. Captain

The day started at 7.30 am with players unfortunately teeing off in the Rain, which stayed with the field for the vast majority of the morning making scoring that little bit harder for the Early starters, but it was no surprise when the perennial ‘Voucher Collectors’ Mr Captain and Ian Marsh rolled in with 44 Points, which held the top of the leader board for about 3 hours until a Couple from Rochdale (Playing with The Chairman and Tom Cooney) came in with a Great score of 47 Points. Which would have won on any other day. The weather cleared, the sun shone, and the wind increased for us afternoon starters. It would be fair to say we had the best of the weather, and so it proved, as Dave and Andy surpassed the 47 with their 48 points. Unbeknown to Dave, Andy was aware of what was in as he could not contain his own excitement at how well they were Playing, stood on the Tee on 18 knowing 2 points would be enough – and he felt the nerves as he knocked it straight left and OOB, Dave who was oblivious to what was going on as usual, calmly hit the fairway, then the green and 2 putted to get the 2 points required. Now unbeknown to most, and whilst those in the morning may have had to put up with the worst part of the day, Andy and Dave had to put up with ‘Whirlwind Wilcock’ who never shut up moaning about the bunkers he went in at Blackburn on Friday – and I know as we could hear him as we went out behind him!!!

Massive thanks to Ian Foulkes and Garry Shoreman for doing the starting in horrible conditions, Matt in the Kitchen, Zoey and Jane Behind the Bar, John and Nicci for opening early ‘For a Pint’ – Craig and James in the Shop for booking in and getting them out - Les / Tim on Comps for adding Visitors to the system and doing the results quickly yesterday – Lady Captain for polishing the Trophy(s) and making them look more than gleaming and Presentable – The NWMGA President (David Watts) Mr Captain and the President for their attendance as part of the Presentation Party, Dave and his Greens team for a great presentation of our Course yesterday, and finally thanks to all the members that supported the event yesterday and for your co-operation over the last few weeks – Thank you all again.

Please see below for the full results list and 2’s, then broken down further to show the prizes and 2’s payout. The attached photo shows Andy and Dave being presented with the Trophy – from L-R, Mr. President, Andy Hirst, NWMGA President, Dave Jolley, and Mr. Captain.

The Next NWMGA Event will be the Seniors (55+) at Rochdale GC on Wednesday, 27th August. A list will be put up for adding your names over the coming days, located in the Foyer.

Best Regards

Mick Kelly

Winter Open Golf Competition Results – 30th January 2025

Bury Golf Club hosted a highly successful Winter Open Golf Competition on 31st January 2025, with golfers enjoying an 18-hole Stableford format on a course in superb condition despite the heavy rainfall earlier in the year. Men played from the yellow tees, and ladies could play from either yellow or red tees (handicap adjusted), with no mats being used, all fairways were open, and summer greens were in play. The mild winter weather, with temperatures around 7°C and only a slight breeze, contributed to a fair yet challenging competition, free from winter mats and temporary greens. The event showcased excellent organisation and dedication from the greens staff, ensuring optimal playing conditions.

The leaderboard was closely contested, with Colin Stephenson scoring 34 points and Paul Carr, the runner-up and winner of the best visitor prize, achieving 33 points. All participants received the day well, with positive feedback on the smooth greens, well-maintained fairways, and friendly atmosphere. For a full breakdown of results, visit the Open Competitions Results Page.

Year-Round Playability

One of Bury Golf Club’s standout features is its ability to accommodate golf all year round. Thanks to unique natural drainage combined with modern man-made systems, the course remains playable regardless of the season. This exceptional drainage ensures that the fairways and greens stay in excellent condition even during heavy rainfall.

Unlike many other courses, Bury Golf Club never requires mats for play. Golfers can always enjoy playing from the fairways and rough throughout the calendar year. Summer greens are consistently used unless frost dictates otherwise, maintaining the quality and experience golfers expect. Grass tees are also utilised year-round, except on select par-3 holes during winter. This dedication to providing an authentic golfing experience, regardless of weather, sets Bury Golf Club apart and makes it a favourite among members and visitors.

Location and Accessibility

Conveniently located just a short drive from Manchester’s bustling city centre, Bury Golf Club is an easy escape into tranquillity. With ample parking and good public transport links, it’s a breeze for both locals and visitors to reach.

The Community at Bury Golf Club

Why Golfers Keep Coming Back

Ask any golfer who’s played at Bury Golf Club, and they’ll tell you the same thing: it’s unforgettable. From the thrilling layout to the welcoming atmosphere, it’s a place you’ll want to visit again and again.

Comparisons to Other Manchester Golf Courses

While Manchester boasts several excellent golf courses, Bury Golf Club’s combination of history, design, and community sets it apart. Its MacKenzie pedigree draws golf purists, and the course consistently delivers on quality.

Sustainability and Course Maintenance

In today’s world, sustainability matters. Bury Golf Club is committed to eco-friendly practices, ensuring the course remains pristine for future generations. The maintenance team works tirelessly to keep every blade of grass in top condition.

Hosting Tournaments and Events

Bury Golf Club is the perfect venue for golf societies, company golf days and corporate outings. Its well-maintained facilities and professional staff ensure every event is a success.

A little hidden Alister Mackenzie ‘gem’ by Paul Howard, PGA Professional

Below is the full review of Bury Golf Club by Paul Howard, PGA Professional
- the original publication can be viewed here.

The great Architect, Alistair McKenzie, was renowned for bringing us some of the worlds great golf courses. Cypress Point, Royal Melbourne, Augusta and one of my favourites, on these shores, Alwoodley. He also helped design a little hidden gem, north of Manchester called, wait for it, ‘Bury’. Yes, ‘Bury’.

You might be forgiven if you haven’t heard of it. I mean Bury itself is best known for its market and black pudding.  They don’t boast a famous sports team. At just 5567 6,015 yards (from the white tees),  and two par 4s that measure just 251 and 264 yards Bury Golf Club might not scream out, on paper. Yet given she features in the top 25 courses in Lancashire I was curious and in need of ticking her off. Clearly others thought in the same way I now do for her to feature in this elite list. So on a Monday morning I took my friend for a visit.

"What I found is possibly one of the best courses in Lancashire for just £35.00."

Driving into the car park, the first impressions might have put some off. No impressive clubhouse or grand entrance. Yet walking up the steps next to the clubhouse I felt quite excited when I was first hit by the first sight of greenery. You can literally see her character from the par 3, 1st tee.

The course has undoubtedly suffered over the wet winter. The bunkers remain as ground under repair. Sure, the greens could be speeded up. Looking beyond that though, the course was one of the most fun courses I’ve played. In true McKenzie fashion the undulating greens stood out above all else. We got to play some of the fun pin positions too, that were placed on crests and the edge of plateaus. At times we found ourselves leaving putts short out of fear of where we might end up.

Quite often golf holes need length to be noticed. Bury doesn’t afford that luxury due to space on which she thrives. On a number of holes one had to drive over a green they’d just played. Yet at every stage the course offered so much fun and character. We felt excited on every tee to see what was coming next. We often found ourselves playing a hole but commenting on an exciting green or view we hadn’t yet visited or seen, that we passed. If ever the course could be summed up it would be by way of the 17th, 103 yard par 3, that plays over a ravine. Just pure fun. There was so many holes that offered a risk and reward scenario. Drivable par 4s, long par 3s, par 4s requiring long iron, second shots… it was ideal for the match play, we played. With her variations I m used every club in the bag.

Leaving the course we vowed to return. I hadn’t even played well… yet I can’t wait to bring others here. There is something so satisfying about a golfer who finds an uncharted land. It reminded me a lot of another Dr Alistair design, Cavendish in Derby. Each shot felt so much fun and challenging. Quirky holes, peacefulness and great views across the course. We spoke on the way home and both agreed it’s a club we would join if we lived in the area. I think you could play here regularly and never become bored. You could play holes countless different ways.

Bury Golf Club is undoubtedly worth a visit. The green fee offers great value for money. I couldn’t believe, on such a nice day, we’d barely seen another golfer either. I am informed they have just 500 members. This possibly explains why we virtually had the course to ourselves.

Who’d have known, I found a little hidden gem. In a little place called Bury.

March 2024 Newsletter

Dear Member,

It has been a month since the last update, and during that month, we received the very sad news that we have lost two longstanding members, Pete James and, most recently, our immediate Past, Captain Graham.

Graham was looking forward to starting work with the Greens Team, and indeed, they were looking forward to welcoming him on board. Both these sad losses show us all how precious life is and put many things into context.

In his farewell speech, Graham spoke about how the club is moving forward and would be the first to say this must continue. Graham was an active member of the Working Party, and the Course Development Team, and both of these teams will miss him greatly. However, they are more determined than ever to keep the momentum going, or Crossy would be giving us one of his famous frowns.

RIP, Peter and Graham, you will be missed by all.

The New Officials

Steve Olive is our new Captain, his Vice Captain is Kevin Speight. Angela Wilkinson is Lady Captain supported by her Vice Captain Sue Warrington. Dave MacIntosh and Barbara Jack continue in their roles as Presidents. We wish them all the best for the coming year.

This year, the Captain's Drive-In will be on March 30th, and the Lady Captain will hold her drive-in on Tuesday, April 2nd. Please come along and support them.

The Board

Four Board Members were elected at the AGM: Tom Cooney (Club Development Director), Mark Howarth (Business Strategy Director), Barbara Jack (HR Director), and Ian McGloughlin (Finance Director). At the first meeting of the Board, Mark was elected as Chair. No doubt Mark will bring his own style to proceedings, and he recognises that the role of the Board is to run Bury Golf Club's “The Business.” The golf will be run by supporting teams.

The Clubhouse

Exciting times are ahead in the Clubhouse with the introduction of Pebble Green Catering, which will be in full swing by the time the season starts in a little over four weeks. Beth has some really good ideas, and we should all look forward to sampling the offerings very soon.

The new digital screens have been well received, and further screen(s) will be added soon.

Please speak to Charlie Hendrie should you wish to advertise your business on the screen; Charlie offers preferential rates to club members.

The Swing Room

The Swing Room is now operational, and in the next week or so, James and the Board will meet to decide how to make maximum use of this new facility. Once this has been decided, it will be communicated to all members. Thanks to the Working Party, Dave Richardson, and Ian Morris for their help in getting this room operational.

The Locker Rooms

The final work has now been completed, and the newly plastered areas on the ceilings have been painted.

A huge thanks once again to the Working Party, who repaired and painted the ceiling and gave the walls a freshen-up. Special thanks must go to Mike Lonsdale for stepping out of his comfort zone and skimming the ceiling and to Ted Hall for the loan of tressels

A Memorial Day

We recently had two memorial events, one in memory of Barry Samuels and one in memory of Dave Boyle. The Board recognise that all past members are special and deserve to have their lives celebrated. The Board has agreed with the families who already sponsor memorial days that one single Memorial Day will be held annually on the first Bank holiday in May from this year onwards. This will make the competition open to all members. It will be a Board Prize, and the trophy played for will be “The Barry Samuel’s Trophy”. The details and the format are still being finalised, but we will keep you informed.

The Course

Dave and his team continue to work very hard in extremely difficult conditions. They recently prepared the course for a Manchester Alliance Pro-am tournament and received high praise from a large number of the Pros for the way the course was presented. Manchester Alliance also praised all connected with the Club who made the day successful. Indeed, they have booked again for next year, so well done to all concerned.

The work on the third fairway is thankfully reaching its conclusion. Further drainage work is necessary on the 11th, 13th and 18th holes, following which work must begin to prepare the course for the season. In the next couple of weeks, the Greens will be “star slit” and top dressed with Fen Dress and Lawn Sand.

The Joker

The Joker continues to evade us all, but equally, it continues to raise funds for the Club. Thanks to everyone who continues to buy tickets. He must be found soon!!!

We remain keen to hear your suggestions on using the Joker fund to enhance your experience at Bury Golf Club. Please feel free to provide your ideas by speaking to Raffa, Tony or Colin Stephenson.

It is now only four weeks to the Captain’s Drive-In and, hopefully, some better weather.

Good golfing, and Best wishes to you all
The Board
